Heating
The gas combination boiler in the cupboard by the bathroom provides hot water on demand and central heating as instructed.
You shouldn't have to do anythng to any controls to run hot water - it works independently of the central heating.
The boiler was upgraded to use the electronic timeswitch on the wall to its left, pictured above, so don't bother trying to use the old timer controls on the front of the boiler itself.
For central heating, use the lower "select" button so the display indicates "timed" for heating in the morning and late afternoon.
If you arrive outside of those times and need heating use the higher, larger button "Advance Boost" to override these times. The timer then 'corrects' itself when the next programmed heating slot comes along.
Please avoid the "on" selection as that gives continuous non-stop running, which of course uses up gas if forgotten.
IMPORTANT: WHEN YOU LEAVE, PLEASE MOVE THE ARROW TO THE "OFF" POSITION using the "select" button.
Problems?
If you find no hot water or heating is available, it's possible the boiler's pilot light has gone out (see photo above).
If the red light on the front of the boiler is lit, then relight by pressing the 'circled' button below the light (press and count slowly to seven!). NB Do not attempt to relight using other means (matches/taking the front off) - that isn't how these things work!
Bathroom heater
There's an effective, additional electric heater in the bathroom with a master switch outside to the left of the bathroom door.
IMPORTANT: BATHROOM DOOR MUST BE SHUT WHENEVER IN USE FOR OBVIOUS REASONS. Please check both switches are off when not in use/you leave.
Wood burner
There's a woodburner in the living room that can throw out loads of heat when it gets going. (It will also heat water using the high tech solution of kettle filled with water placed on the top - for drinks, washng up etc.) If you haven't used a wood burner a generally effective method is to open up all the air vents to get started (opening the little door beneath the main burner really helps at the start - this is also where the ash is collected in a tray, which needs emptying after each fire or two - just outside the drive gate is good in the wheel tracks, to help suppress grass growth), and then gradually start closing vents as the fire becomes established. There may be firelighters in the cupboard under the kettle but they aren't usually needed. There's a handbook for the burner somewhere around if you need more info....
We lay the fire for the next visitors who may need to get the place warmed up in a hurry during the colder months.
A basket of logs and some kindling will be provided for you when you arrive, and you may be able to buy more from Nick and Rachel next door if they're about, or logs available from the garage at Holmrook (CA19 1YG). You can also buy them at Pellymounters (CA20 1PU, tel: 019467 28822), the hardware shop in Seascale, from about October to mid-April.
Carbon monoxide alarm
There's a carbon monoxide alarm in the living room.
